What are the symptoms of a brain injury?

It is a sad reality that many who are in an accident suffer a head injury. Though this may cause initial pain, accident victims and their families may be left wondering whether a traumatic brain injury has been suffered. However, without closely watching one’s symptoms, it may be difficult to catch such an injury, which could delay much needed treatment.

So what are the signs of traumatic brain injury? It depends on the severity of the injury. For example, a mild traumatic brain injury might be present if the victim lost consciousness for a few seconds, is dazed and confused, suffers a headache, vomiting, drowsiness, or sleeps more than he or she usually does. Additionally, a mild injury may cause the victim blurred vision, light and/or sound sensitivity, and other sensory problems. He or she may also become depressed, experience changes in his or her mood, suffer memory loss, and experience concentration problems. These symptoms may be apparent immediately after the injury is suffered, or it could take days for them to present themselves.

A severe traumatic brain injury, on the other hand, may have more apparent symptoms. Consciousness may be lost for an extended period of time, headaches and nausea may be continual and gradually worsen, seizures may begin, fluid might drain from the victim’s ears or nose, and he or she might lose coordination. Also, a severe brain injury sufferer may experience extreme confusion, slurred speech, and he or she might even fall into a coma.

Those who have been in an accident should be aware of all of their symptoms. Doing so allows them to obtain medical treatment when necessary, and might even prevent a condition from worsening. Therefore, those who experience the symptoms listed above may want to seek immediate medical attention.
